Barcelona City Break: Airport to City, Gaudí Tickets, Beaches and Mobile Data
Barcelona has it all for a few days away: Gaudí's buildings, the Gothic Quarter, a city beach and late, long dinners. The main things to plan are the Gaudí tickets, which sell out, and keeping an eye on your phone in the busiest streets. Here is the rest.
Before you go
- Entry: Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the visa rules for your passport, and whether the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation has started, before you travel.
- Mobile data: If your phone plan does not include EU roaming (for example a SIM from the UK, the US, Switzerland or Turkey), data in Spain can be expensive. A Spain eSIM costs €2.29 for 3 GB on the Orange and Movistar networks.
- Timing: lunch is around 14:00 and dinner rarely before 21:00. Many restaurants are quiet before then.
From the airport to the city
| Option | To | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aerobús | Plaça d'Espanya and Plaça de Catalunya | Every few minutes from both terminals, about 35 minutes |
| R2 Nord train | Sants and Passeig de Gràcia | From Terminal 2 only; cheaper than the bus |
| Metro L9 Sud | Connects to the metro network | From both terminals; needs a special airport ticket |
Some low-cost flights use Girona or Reus, both more than an hour away by bus.
Getting around
- T-casual: a 10-journey ticket for the metro, buses and local trains in zone 1, cheaper than single tickets.
- Hola Barcelona: unlimited travel for 2 to 5 days, including the airport metro.
- Walk: the Gothic Quarter, El Born and the seafront are best on foot.
What to book ahead
- The Sagrada Família: timed tickets, often sold out days ahead in summer. Book on the official site.
- Park Güell: the monumental zone needs a timed ticket.
- Casa Batlló and La Pedrera: Gaudí's houses on Passeig de Gràcia; booking online is cheaper.
- Free: the Gothic Quarter, La Boqueria market, Barceloneta beach and the view from Montjuïc.
Prices and opening times change. Check the official sites before you go.
A 3-day plan
- Day 1: the Sagrada Família, Passeig de Gràcia with Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, dinner in Gràcia.
- Day 2: the Gothic Quarter and the cathedral, El Born, La Boqueria, the beach at Barceloneta.
- Day 3: Park Güell in the morning, Montjuïc and the Magic Fountain in the evening, when it is running.
Practical tips
- Pickpockets are the biggest risk, especially on Las Ramblas, in the metro and on the beach. Keep your phone in a front pocket or a zipped bag.
- Menú del día at lunchtime gives you two or three courses for a fixed, low price.
