How to Install an eSIM on iPhone and Android, Step by Step
Installing an eSIM takes about two minutes and you only do it once per trip. Do it at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly, then switch it on when you land. Here is exactly how, on iPhone and on Android.
Before you start
- Wi-Fi: the phone downloads the eSIM, so it needs an internet connection during installation.
- An unlocked phone that supports eSIM. Not sure? See which phones support eSIM, or dial *#06#: if an EID number shows up, you are fine.
- Your QR code or install link. After you buy on rrugo.com/esim or in the RruGO app, it is on your order page and in your email.
iPhone: the one-tap way (iOS 17.4 or newer)
- Open your order page on the iPhone you will use.
- Tap Install on iPhone, then Continue.
- Give the eSIM a name such as "Travel" so you can tell it apart from your usual line.
- When asked which line to use, keep your usual number for calls and texts. You will switch data to the eSIM when you land.
iPhone: with the QR code
- Open the QR code on another screen, for example your laptop, or print it.
- On the iPhone go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → Use QR Code and scan it.
- No second screen? Tap Enter Details Manually and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your order page.
Samsung Galaxy
- Go to Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM.
- Choose Scan QR code from service provider and scan the code.
- Or choose Enter activation code and type the codes from your order page.
Google Pixel and other Android phones
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Download a SIM instead.
- Scan the QR code, or tap Need help? and enter the codes manually.
- Menu names differ a little between brands. Searching for "eSIM" in the Settings search bar usually finds the right place.
When you land
- Turn the eSIM on and choose it for mobile data. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data. On Android: SIM manager → Mobile data.
- Turn on Data roaming for the eSIM. This is normal for travel eSIMs and costs nothing extra.
- Turn off data roaming for your usual SIM, so it does not use expensive roaming data in the background. It still receives calls and texts.
If it does not connect
- Check data roaming is on for the eSIM. This is the most common cause.
- Restart the phone, or turn flight mode on and off.
- Choose the network manually: in the eSIM's settings, turn off automatic network selection and pick one of the networks listed on the plan.
- APN: if your order page shows an APN, enter it under the eSIM's mobile data network settings.
- Still nothing? Email support@rrugo.com with your order email and we will help.
Do not delete the eSIM from your phone until the plan has ended. A deleted eSIM cannot be installed again. You can keep it switched off between uses.
