Cappadocia in 2 Days: Getting There, Balloon Flights and What to See

Cappadocia is the Turkey of the postcards: hundreds of hot-air balloons at sunrise over valleys of rock towers, churches carved into cliffs and cities dug deep underground. Two full days are enough to see the best of it. Here is how to plan them.

Getting there

OptionDetails
Fly to Nevşehir (NAV)The closest airport, about 40 km from Göreme. Fewer flights.
Fly to Kayseri (ASR)About 75 km from Göreme, with more flights, including from Istanbul several times a day.
Overnight busAround 10 hours from Istanbul, also from Antalya. Cheap and you save a hotel night.

From either airport, shared shuttles drop you at your hotel. Book them in advance or ask your hotel to arrange one, as there is little public transport to the villages.

Where to stay

  • Göreme: the centre of everything, with cave hotels, restaurants and the balloon launch fields close by.
  • Uçhisar: quieter, around the rock castle, with some of the best views.
  • Ürgüp: a real town with more restaurants and a little further from the crowds.
  • Avanos: on the river, known for its pottery.

Balloon flights

  • Book early in your stay. Flights depend on the wind and are cancelled quite often, especially in winter. If you book for your first morning, you still have the second one if it is cancelled.
  • Prices vary a lot with the season, the size of the basket and how late you book. Choose a licensed operator, check what is included (hotel pick-up, the flight time) and the refund rules for a weather cancellation.
  • Pick-up is before dawn, around an hour before sunrise. Bring a warm layer: mornings are cold even in summer.
  • Not flying? Watching hundreds of balloons rise from the hills above Göreme at sunrise is free and just as memorable.

Operators send pick-up times and weather updates by WhatsApp late in the evening, so make sure you have mobile data at the hotel and on the way.

A 2-day plan

  1. Day 1: the Göreme Open-Air Museum with its painted rock churches, a walk through Rose Valley or Love Valley in the afternoon, sunset from Uçhisar Castle or the Red Valley viewpoint.
  2. Day 2: balloons at sunrise, then an underground city (Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı), Pigeon Valley and the pottery workshops of Avanos.

Short on time or without a car? The local day tours, usually called the Red Tour (north) and the Green Tour (south, with the Ihlara Valley), include transport and a guide.

Practical tips

  • Good shoes: the valley paths are dusty and steep in places.
  • Seasons: spring and autumn are ideal. Summer days are hot, winters are cold and often snowy, which is beautiful but means more balloon cancellations.
  • Museum tickets: if you plan to visit several sites, compare the price of single tickets with a museum pass for the region.
