Getting Around Kosovo Without a Car: Buses, Shared Rides and Taxis
Kosovo is small. Prishtina to Prizren takes under two hours, and you can cross the whole country in an afternoon. You don't need a rental car to see it: between frequent intercity buses and locals driving the same roads every day, getting around is cheap and easy once you know how it works.
The short version
- Intercity buses connect almost every town, usually from early morning until about 19:00–21:00.
- Fares are low. Most trips cost €1–5 and you pay in cash on the bus.
- Sundays are quieter. Many routes have far fewer departures, and some run Monday to Saturday only.
- After the last bus, or on routes with few direct buses, a shared car ride is often the easiest option.
- Kosovo uses the euro. Carry small notes and coins for bus fares.
Intercity buses
Buses are the backbone of travel in Kosovo. Many private companies run the same corridors, so on busy routes like Prishtina–Prizren or Prishtina–Peja there is a bus every 20–30 minutes for most of the day. There is no single national operator and no need to book ahead: you turn up and get on.
How to catch one
- Go to the town's main bus station (stacioni i autobusëve). Most intercity buses start and finish there.
- Look for your destination on the sign in the bus windscreen. Drivers and conductors are used to visitors, so just say the town name.
- Pay in cash when you board or once the bus is moving. Keep small change ready.
What it costs
Typical fares and journey times on popular routes:
| Route | Journey time | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Prishtina → Prizren | about 1 h 45 min | €4–5 |
| Prishtina → Peja | about 1 h 20 min | €5 |
| Prishtina → Gjakova | about 1 h 30 min | €3–6 |
| Prishtina → Gjilan | about 1 h 15 min | €2.50–3 |
| Prishtina → Ferizaj | about 50 min | €1–2 |
| Prishtina → Mitrovica | about 45 min | €1.50–1.80 |
| Peja → Gjakova | about 45 min | €3 |
| Gjakova → Prizren | about 55 min | €2.50–3.50 |
Times and fares are taken from published operator timetables as of October 2026. Operators change their schedules, so check the latest times before you travel.
Things that catch visitors out
- Early last buses. On most intercity routes the last departure is between 19:00 and 21:00. The last bus from Prizren back to Prishtina leaves around 19:45.
- Sundays. Prishtina–Mitrovica goes from around 55 departures on a weekday to about 10 on Sunday, and Prishtina–Ferizaj from around 35 to about 12.
- Cross-country trips. Routes that don't pass through Prishtina, such as Peja–Prizren, have only a few direct buses a day. Often you change in another town.
Shared rides
Every day, people drive between Kosovo's towns with empty seats: students heading home, commuters, families visiting relatives. RruGO lets them offer those seats to passengers going the same way. You see the driver, the departure time and the price per seat before you book, and you pay the driver in cash. RruGO takes no commission.
For visitors, shared rides are useful when:
- the last bus has already gone, or it's Sunday and buses are thin;
- there is no direct bus between the two towns you want;
- you'd rather message the driver and arrange a pickup point along the way than walk to a bus station.
Every user on RruGO verifies their ID, drivers and passengers rate each other after each trip, and location is shared only while a ride is in progress.
Taxis
Taxis are easy to find in every city and are fine for short trips within town. Use a marked, licensed taxi and agree on the fare (or check the meter is on) before you set off. For trips between cities they cost many times more than the bus or a shared ride.
Getting from Prishtina Airport
Prishtina International Airport (PRN) is about 15 km from the city. An airport bus runs to Prishtina bus station roughly every two hours during the day, and the trip takes about 45 minutes. Taxis wait outside arrivals. Around holidays and in summer, when many people from the diaspora fly home, drivers on RruGO also post rides to and from the airport.
Buses and rides in one search
RruGO shows bus departures and car rides for your route in the same search, so you can compare times and prices at a glance, even for trips that need a change. Here's how to check bus times in the app.
