From Kosovo to Valbona and Theth: Reaching the Albanian Alps
Valbona and Theth, two valleys in the Albanian Alps, are some of the most beautiful places in the Balkans, and from western Kosovo they're surprisingly close. Valbona is only a couple of hours from Gjakova. Here's how to get there without a car, and how to link the two valleys.
The classic loop
- Kosovo → Bajram Curri: bus from Prishtina to Gjakova, then a minibus over the border (Qafa e Morinës) to Bajram Curri.
- Bajram Curri → Valbona: a local minibus up the valley, usually once a day in the afternoon.
- Valbona → Theth: the famous hike over the Valbona Pass, about 6–8 hours on foot.
- Theth → Shkodër: minibus down the mountain road, then onward to Tirana or the coast.
Many people do it the other way round: Shkodër → Komani Lake ferry → Fierza → Valbona → hike → Theth → Shkodër.
Step 1: Getting to Bajram Curri from Kosovo
Take a bus from Prishtina to Gjakova (about 1 h 30 min, see the Prishtina → Gjakova timetable). From Gjakova, minibuses cross the border at Qafa e Morinës to Bajram Curri, and the trip is short. Bring your passport or ID card.
Easier still: Bajram Curri is in the RruGO app, so you can search for a shared ride from Prishtina, Prizren or Gjakova straight there and skip the change in Gjakova.
Step 2: Up to Valbona
A minibus runs from Bajram Curri up the Valbona valley, usually once a day in the early afternoon, and comes back down the next morning. Times change by season, so ask in Bajram Curri or at your guesthouse in Valbona. They often help arrange transport. A taxi is the alternative if you miss it.
Step 3: The Valbona–Theth hike
The trail over the Valbona Pass takes most people 6–8 hours. It's a proper mountain hike with a steep climb, but no technical difficulty in summer. The usual season is mid-June to September, since snow can block the pass into early summer. Start early, carry water and food, and send your big luggage round by road if your guesthouse offers it.
The Komani ferry
The ferry across Komani Lake, between Koman and Fierza near Bajram Curri, is one of the most scenic boat trips in Europe and takes about 2.5–3 hours. It runs in the warmer months only. Check the season and book ahead in summer.
Tips
- Cash: bring lek for minibuses and guesthouses. Card payment is rare in the valleys.
- Mobile signal is patchy on the pass. Download maps offline.
- Book guesthouses in July and August. They fill up.
- Leaving from Theth, minibuses to Shkodër go mostly in the morning. Arrange it the evening before.
