Planning a Summer Holiday in Albania from Kosovo: When, Where and How

For many families in Kosovo, summer means the Albanian sea. It's close, it's familiar, and since the motorway through Kukës opened you can be on the beach in a few hours. With a little planning you can avoid the worst crowds and prices, and you don't even need a car.

1. Pick your dates

  • June and September are the best months if you can choose: warm sea, fewer people, lower prices and easier border crossings.
  • July and August are peak season, when the diaspora is home too. Expect full beaches, higher prices and queues at Vërmicë–Morinë, especially on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
  • Avoid travelling on peak days if you can. Leaving on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning is much calmer than a Friday.

2. Choose where to go

Driving times without long stops. Summer traffic and border queues can add an hour or two.

For a weekend, stay in the north. For a week, the Vlorë–Sarandë coast is worth the longer trip. More detail: Kosovo to the Albanian coast and the Albanian Riviera without a car.

3. Decide how to get there

  • Shared ride: on RruGO, search your route, such as Prishtinë → Durrës or Prizren → Vlorë. You go straight to the coast, without changing buses in Tirana. Book early for July and August, or set up a ride alert for your date.
  • Bus: go to Tirana first, then take a bus south. In summer some operators also run direct buses from Kosovo to the coast.
  • Driving yourself? Post your trip on RruGO and share the fuel cost with passengers going the same way.

4. What to book early

  • Accommodation for July–August, ideally months ahead. Good apartments near the beach go first.
  • Your ride for Friday departures and Sunday returns.
  • Boat trips and tours in peak weeks, for example from Sarandë or Vlorë.

5. Pack and prepare

  • Passport or ID card for the border.
  • Some lek for buses, small shops and parking. Euros are widely accepted on the coast, but change often comes back in lek.
  • Mobile data: Kosovo and Albanian SIM cards usually work in both countries, but SIM cards from the EU, Switzerland or elsewhere often don't include roaming here. An eSIM is the easy fix.
  • Sun protection and water for the drive. Summer days on the road are hot.
