Summer Beach Holidays from Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia: Where You Need an eSIM

Every summer the same question comes up before the beach holiday: will my phone work there, and what will it cost? The answer depends on where you go. Some of the favourite beaches are covered by regional roaming, others are not, and that is where a few euros on an eSIM saves a big bill.

Where your home SIM already works

If your SIM is from Kosovo, Albania or North Macedonia, the Western Balkans roaming agreement usually lets you use it at home prices, within fair-use limits, in:

  • Albania: Durrës, Golem, Vlora, Ksamil, Saranda.
  • Montenegro: Ulcinj, Bar, Budva.
  • North Macedonia: Ohrid and Struga.

Check that your package includes regional roaming before you go. For the diaspora coming with a German, Swiss or other EU SIM, these countries are outside EU roaming, so the picture is reversed: see the eSIMs for Albania and Montenegro.

Where you need an eSIM

DestinationPlan for two weeksPrice
Greece (Halkidiki, Thassos, Corfu, the islands)5 GB, 30 days€3.39
Croatia (Split, Makarska, Dubrovnik)5 GB, 30 days€3.39
Bulgaria (Sunny Beach, Sozopol)5 GB, 30 days€3.39
Turkey (Antalya, Bodrum, Alanya)10 GB, 30 days€4.39
Egypt (Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh)5 GB, 30 days€7.09

Prices as of October 2026 and may change before summer. Current prices are always on the eSIM page.

Greece, Croatia and Bulgaria are in the EU, which is great for EU SIM cards but means roaming for SIMs from Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia. Turkey and Egypt are outside every zone, so roaming there is expensive for everyone.

Driving through several countries?

A road trip from Kosovo through North Macedonia to Halkidiki only needs a Greece eSIM, because your SIM covers North Macedonia. Planning a longer Balkan tour with Greece, Croatia and Bulgaria? Compare a single-country eSIM for each with a regional plan on the eSIM page; for most trips, single-country plans are cheaper. More in mobile data on the road.

How much data for a beach holiday

  • Maps, messages and a few photos: 3 GB for a week.
  • Instagram stories and reels every day: 5 GB for one to two weeks.
  • Hotspot for the family or streaming at the hotel: 10 GB or more.

Beach tips

  • Heat and sand are hard on phones. Keep it in the shade and in a bag, not on the towel in the sun.
  • Beach and hotel Wi-Fi is often slow at peak times. With an eSIM you do not depend on it.
  • Buy early, install at home. Most plans start only when your phone connects at the destination, so you can buy weeks before you go.
