Driving or Taking the Bus from Kosovo to Germany or Switzerland: Mobile Data Along the Way

Every summer and every holiday season, thousands of people drive or take the bus between Kosovo and Germany, Switzerland or Austria. The trip crosses several countries and two different roaming zones. Knowing which SIM works where saves you from a big bill halfway through Croatia.

The two roaming zones on the way

  • Western Balkans: Kosovo, Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina have a regional roaming agreement. A SIM from one of them usually works in the others at home prices, within fair-use limits.
  • The EU: Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Italy are EU countries. EU SIM cards work there at home prices, but SIMs from Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia pay roaming.
  • Switzerland is in neither zone, so roaming is expensive for almost everyone.

Leaving Kosovo with a Kosovo SIM

Your SIM should be fine through Serbia or North Macedonia. The expensive part starts when you enter the EU, usually in Croatia or Hungary. That is where a Europe eSIM takes over.

PlanCoversPrice
Europe, 5 GB, 30 daysEU countries plus Switzerland, the UK and Norway (33 countries)€3.89
Europe, 10 GB, 30 daysSame 33 countries€7.59
Europe, 5 GB, 30 daysEU plus Serbia, North Macedonia, Switzerland and Turkey (41 countries)€12.39

Prices as of October 2026. Current prices and the full country list for each plan are on the Europe eSIM page.

The cheaper 33-country plan is usually enough when you leave from Kosovo: your own SIM covers the Balkans, and the eSIM covers everything from Croatia or Hungary to Germany and Switzerland.

Coming home with a German, Swiss or Austrian SIM

It works the other way round. An EU SIM is fine until the EU border, then Serbia, North Macedonia and Kosovo are all outside EU roaming.

  • Driving through Serbia or North Macedonia: the 41-country Europe plan includes both.
  • For your stay in Kosovo: no Europe-wide plan includes Kosovo or Albania, so add a Kosovo eSIM or an Albania eSIM. Read more in eSIM for Kosovo.
  • Swiss SIM? Check your package carefully. Many Swiss plans charge for data even in the EU.

Set it all up before you leave

  1. Buy and install the eSIMs at home on Wi-Fi. A phone can hold several eSIMs, and you switch between them in the settings.
  2. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM before you cross into a zone where it would cost extra.
  3. When you cross the border, choose the right eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
  4. Download offline maps for the route, in case of weak signal on mountain roads.

Tips for the road

  • Border queues in summer and before New Year can be long. Live traffic in Google Maps or Waze uses very little data and helps you pick a crossing.
  • Hotspot for the whole car: one eSIM with 10 GB can keep the passengers' phones online. Choose a bigger plan if the children stream videos.
  • On the bus: long-distance buses often have no Wi-Fi or a very slow one, so the eSIM is worth it there too.
