From Kosovo to the Albanian Coast: Getting to Durrës, Shëngjin and the Beaches
Kosovo has no coastline, so every summer a large part of the country heads to the Albanian sea. Since the motorway through Kukës opened, Shëngjin and Durrës are just a few hours from Prishtina, close enough for a weekend.
How far is the sea?
| Route | By car (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Prishtina → Shëngjin | about 3 h 30 min |
| Prishtina → Durrës | about 4 h |
| Prizren → Durrës | about 3 h |
| Prishtina → Vlorë | about 6 h |
| Prishtina → Sarandë | about 8 h |
Driving times without long stops. In peak season, traffic and border queues can easily add an hour or two.
Which beach?
- Shëngjin and the north: the closest to Kosovo and very popular with Kosovar families. Easy for a weekend.
- Durrës: a long sandy beach, a lively city and Tirana only about 40 minutes away. Good if you want the city and the beach in one trip.
- Vlorë and the Riviera (Orikum, Himarë, all the way down to Sarandë): clearer water and dramatic coastline, but a long day of travel. Better for a week than a weekend.
By bus
In summer, extra buses run from Kosovo's main cities to Durrës and other resorts on top of the regular Prishtina–Tirana services. Tickets for Fridays and for early August sell out fast, so buy them a few days ahead, and check the return times before you go.
By shared ride
Summer is when the most people drive from Kosovo to the coast, and many have empty seats. On RruGO, search your route, for example Prishtinë → Durrës or Prizren → Shëngjin. You see the driver, the departure time and the price per seat before you book, and you pay the driver in cash.
- Going by car yourself? Post your trip and share the cost of fuel and the motorway toll with passengers going the same way.
- No ride for your date yet? Set up a ride alert and you'll be notified when one is posted.
- Coming back: book your return early. Sunday evenings in summer are the busiest time on the road.
Tips for the summer trip
- Leave early. Setting off in the early morning beats both the heat and the border queues.
- Avoid peak days if you can: Friday and Saturday mornings heading south, Sunday evenings heading back.
- Bring your passport or ID card for the Vërmicë–Morinë crossing.
- Carry some lek. Euros are widely accepted on the coast, but change often comes back in lek and small shops may prefer it.
