Getting to Brezovica Ski Resort Without a Car

Brezovica, in the Sharr Mountains in the south of Kosovo, is the country's ski resort. It's close enough to Prishtina for a day trip, but the last part of the road climbs into the mountains, and in winter that's where a car, or a lift with someone, makes life easier.

Lift operations at Brezovica change from season to season, and some winters have had little snow. Check snow conditions and which lifts are running before you travel.

By bus

In the ski season, some operators run buses to Brezovica from Prishtina, and the trip takes about an hour and a half. These are seasonal and not in the regular intercity timetables, so ask at Prishtina bus station or check with the operator a few days before.

Otherwise, take a regular bus to Ferizaj (Prishtina → Ferizaj timetable, about 50 minutes) and continue from there by taxi or a lift. Ferizaj is the closest bigger town to the mountains.

By shared ride

On winter weekends plenty of people drive up to Brezovica, often with free seats. On RruGO, search for rides from Prishtina or Ferizaj on your date. If you find nothing, set up a ride alert. A shared ride takes you all the way up, so there's no change in Ferizaj, and the driver knows the mountain road.

• Skis or a board? Message the driver before booking to check there's room.
• Coming back: agree on the return time. Lifts usually close in the afternoon and it gets dark early.

Tips for a day on the mountain

• Start early. The road is easier in daylight, and you get more time on the snow.
• Bring cash for lift passes, equipment rental and food. Card payment isn't guaranteed.
• Dress in layers. Weather in the Sharr Mountains changes quickly.
• Driving yourself? Winter tyres are essential and chains are a good idea.
