Getting Around Albania Without a Car: Buses, Furgons and Shared Rides
Getting around Albania by public transport is very doable, but it works differently from Kosovo. There's no national timetable and no online booking for most routes, and the bus you need may be a big coach or a minibus that leaves when it's full. Once you know how it works, it's cheap and gets you almost everywhere.
The short version
- Two kinds of transport: intercity buses (proper coaches with fixed departure times) on the main routes, and furgons, minibuses with 8–20 seats that often leave when they're full.
- Pay in cash, in lek, to the driver or conductor. Euros are sometimes accepted but don't count on it.
- No single bus station. In Tirana, buses for the north and the south leave from different places, and locations change. Ask your accommodation or check Google Maps the day before.
- Mornings are best. Most departures are early, and service thins out in the afternoon and on Sundays.
Typical journey times from Tirana
| Route | By bus (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Tirana → Durrës | about 45 min – 1 h |
| Tirana → Shkodër | about 2 h |
| Tirana → Berat | about 2 h 30 min |
| Tirana → Vlorë | about 2 h 30 min |
| Tirana → Sarandë | about 5 h |
Approximate times from operators and travel guides. Albanian schedules change often and aren't published centrally, so confirm the departure point and time locally.
Buses vs furgons
Intercity buses run the busiest corridors (Tirana–Durrës, Tirana–Shkodër, Tirana–Vlorë, Tirana–Sarandë). They have fixed times, more legroom and space for luggage.
Furgons fill the gaps: smaller towns, mountain roads and routes with few buses. They usually wait until they're full, and drivers often stop wherever you ask along the way. You may pay a little extra for a large suitcase.
Where shared rides help
RruGO covers cities in Albania as well as Kosovo, so you can find drivers going the same way, especially on cross-border routes like Prishtinë → Tiranë, Prizren → Durrës or to Tirana Airport. A shared ride is often easier when:
- you're travelling in the afternoon or on a Sunday, when buses are scarce;
- you're coming from Kosovo and don't want to change buses in Tirana;
- you have luggage and want to be dropped closer to your accommodation.
You see the price per seat before you book and pay the driver in cash. If no ride is posted for your date, set up a ride alert.
Practical tips
- Carry small notes in lek. Drivers rarely have change for large notes.
- Ask twice. Confirm the departure point with your accommodation and again with a driver when you get there.
- Summer is busy. In July and August buses to the coast fill up, so go early or book a ride in advance.
- Coming from Kosovo? See Prishtina to Tirana and Kosovo to the Albanian coast.
