Coming Home for New Year: Getting Around Kosovo in December

Every December, tens of thousands of people from the diaspora come home to Kosovo for New Year. Flights fill up, airports get busy and the roads to the border queue for hours. A little planning makes the trip from the airport to your door much easier.

Which airport?

AirportTo Prishtina by carGood to know
Prishtina (PRN)about 30 minClosest, but December flights sell out early and cost the most
Skopje (SKP)about 1 h 30 min – 2 hBorder at Blace – Hani i Elezit, often cheaper flights
Tirana (TIA)about 3 h 30 minMost flights, but the longest road and the busiest border

A cheaper flight into Tirana or Skopje isn't always cheaper in the end. Add the onward trip and, in late December, a possible wait at the border. More detail: flying to Kosovo via Tirana or Skopje.

From Prishtina Airport to your town

  • Airport bus (line 1A) to Prishtina bus station, roughly every one to two hours, about €3 in cash. From the station, intercity buses go to every town. See the airport bus timetable.
  • Shared ride straight to your town. Around the holidays many drivers post rides from the airport. Search Prishtina Airport → your town on RruGO.
  • Taxi from outside arrivals. The quickest option, but by far the most expensive for longer trips.

Plan around the December rush

  • Book your ride early. Seats from the airports on the 20th–24th of December go quickly. If nothing is posted yet for your date, set up a ride alert and you'll be notified when a ride appears.
  • Leave time for the border. Crossings like Vërmicë–Morinë and Hani i Elezit can have long queues in the days before New Year and when everyone heads back in early January.
  • Check bus days. Around 31 December and 1 January many buses run a holiday or Sunday schedule. Check the bus timetables and leave a margin.
  • Winter roads. If you're driving or getting a lift through the mountains (Kukës, Brezovica, Rugova), expect snow and ice. Winter tyres are a must.

Driving home anyway? Share the trip

If you're driving from the airport or from abroad with empty seats, post the trip on RruGO. Other people are heading the same way, and you can share the fuel cost. RruGO takes no commission. Here's how it works for drivers.

Going back in January

The first weekend of January is just as busy in the other direction. Book your ride to the airport as soon as you know your flight, and give yourself extra time at the border and at airport security.
