Christmas Markets in Vienna, Munich, Prague and Budapest: Mobile Data for a Winter City Break

From late November to Christmas, Vienna, Munich, Salzburg, Prague and Budapest fill up with Christmas markets, and they are a short, cheap flight from Prishtina, Tirana and Skopje. All of them are in the EU, where roaming on a Kosovo, Albanian or Macedonian SIM is expensive. A travel eSIM keeps maps, tickets and photos working for a few euros.

When the markets are open

  • Most markets open in the second half of November and run until 23 or 24 December. Some, like several in Vienna and Budapest, stay open until New Year or even early January.
  • Weekends are the busiest. If you can, go on a weekday afternoon and stay for the lights after dark.
  • Exact dates change every year, so check the city's official tourism site before you book.

What an eSIM costs for the trip

CityPlanPrice
Vienna or Salzburg (Austria)3 GB, 15 days€2.29
Munich, Nuremberg or Berlin (Germany)3 GB, 15 days€2.29
Prague (Czechia)3 GB, 15 days€2.29
Budapest (Hungary)3 GB, 15 days€2.29
Several countries on one tripEurope, 5 GB, 30 days€3.89

Prices as of October 2026. Current prices are always on the eSIM page.

For a long weekend, 3 GB is plenty for maps, messages and photos. Vienna to Budapest or Prague is an easy train ride, and the Europe plan covers all of them with one eSIM.

Tips for a winter city break

  • Cold drains batteries. Phones lose charge quickly outside in winter. Carry a power bank and keep the phone in an inside pocket.
  • Train and transport tickets are easiest in the official apps (ÖBB in Austria, DB Navigator in Germany), and they need data.
  • Cards are widely accepted, but some market stalls are cash only. In Prague and Budapest the local currency is the koruna and the forint, not the euro.
  • Install the eSIM at home before you fly, and switch data to it when you land.

How it works

  1. Buy the eSIM on rrugo.com/esim or in the RruGO app. The QR code arrives straight away.
  2. Install it on Wi-Fi with our step-by-step guide.
  3. When you land, choose the eSIM for mobile data, turn on data roaming for it, and turn data roaming off for your usual SIM.
