eSIM or Roaming? What Mobile Data Abroad Really Costs

For people from Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia, most trips abroad are outside the cheap regional roaming zones. That is where roaming gets expensive: data is often charged per megabyte or with daily passes that add up fast. A travel eSIM is a prepaid data plan for the country you visit, with the price fixed before you leave.

How roaming is usually charged

  • Per megabyte outside any package. A few hours of maps and messaging can turn into a large bill.
  • Daily passes with a small data allowance. Convenient, but over a week or two they cost much more than a plan for the whole trip.
  • Regional packages sometimes cover nearby countries. Check exactly which countries are included before you rely on one.

Prices differ by operator and change often, so check your own operator's roaming rates for the country you are visiting.

How a travel eSIM works

  • You pay once for a set amount of data and days, for example 5 GB for 30 days, and you see the price before you buy.
  • No surprise bill: when the data runs out, it simply stops. You can buy more if you need it.
  • Your number stays. Your usual SIM remains in the phone for calls and texts, while the eSIM handles data. WhatsApp and Viber keep working with your number.
  • It starts when you arrive. Most plans start when the phone connects in the destination country, so you can buy days ahead.

When roaming is still fine

  • Your operator's package already includes the country you are visiting, with enough data.
  • A very short trip where you hardly use data.
  • Your phone does not support eSIM. Check which phones support eSIM.

How much data do you need?

  • Messaging and maps: about 1 GB per week.
  • Plus social media and photos: 3 to 5 GB per week.
  • Video calls and streaming: 10 GB or more. An hour of video uses roughly 0.5 GB or more.
