eSIM for Kosovo: Mobile Data for Visitors and the Diaspora, Without Roaming
Coming to Kosovo from Germany, Switzerland, Austria or anywhere else in Europe? Your home SIM probably does not treat Kosovo like an EU country. Kosovo is outside the EU roaming zone, so data here is often charged per megabyte or with expensive daily passes. A Kosovo eSIM gives you mobile data from the moment you land in Prishtina, without a shop visit and without changing your number.
The short version
- EU "roam like at home" does not cover Kosovo. Check your operator's rate for Kosovo before you travel. It is often listed under a "rest of the world" or "zone 2" price.
- A Kosovo eSIM runs on a local Kosovo network and starts working when you land.
- Your number stays in the phone for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps your number.
- Staying a month or longer and using a lot of data? A local prepaid SIM bought in a shop is usually cheaper. For a short visit, the eSIM is the easiest option.
What a Kosovo eSIM costs
| Visit | Plan | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend or a few days | 1 GB, 7 days | €3.99 |
| One to three weeks, maps and messages | 3 GB, 30 days | €10.79 |
| Summer holiday, social media and photos | 5 GB, 30 days | €16.69 |
| Video calls and streaming | 10 GB, 30 days | €30.19 |
Prices as of October 2026. Current prices are always on the Kosovo eSIM page.
Kosovo eSIMs cost more than eSIMs for Germany or Turkey, because the wholesale price of Kosovo data is higher. Compared with roaming on a Western European SIM, they still usually save a lot, and the price is fixed before you go.
Who needs one
- The diaspora coming home for summer, weddings or the holidays, with a German, Swiss, Austrian, Swedish or other European SIM.
- Visitors and tourists who want maps, ride apps and messaging from the airport onwards.
- Business travellers who need data on the first day and cannot spend time in a phone shop.
If your SIM is from Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina, check your package first: the Western Balkans regional roaming agreement means many of those plans already work in Kosovo at home prices.
eSIM or a local SIM card?
| Kosovo eSIM | Local prepaid SIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Works when you land | Yes | After you find a shop |
| Keeps your number in the phone | Yes, side by side | Only with a dual-SIM phone |
| Price for a long stay | Higher | Usually lower |
| Local Kosovo number | No, data only | Yes |
Many people do both: the eSIM for the first days, then a local SIM if they stay all summer.
How it works
- Buy the eSIM on rrugo.com/esim or in the RruGO app. The QR code arrives straight away, on screen and by email.
- Install it at home on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly. See our step-by-step guide.
- When you land, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on "Data roaming" for it.
- Turn off data roaming for your home SIM, so it does not use expensive data in the background.
Travelling on to Albania or North Macedonia?
A Kosovo eSIM works in Kosovo only. If you are also visiting the coast in Albania or family in North Macedonia, add an eSIM for Albania or North Macedonia. You can keep several eSIMs on one phone and switch between them.
Getting from the airport
Once you have data, see Prishtina Airport to the city for buses and taxis, or find a shared ride to Prizren, Peja or Gjilan in the RruGO app.
