Which Phones Support eSIM? How to Check in 10 Seconds

Most phones from the last few years support eSIM, but not all of them, especially cheaper Android models. Checking takes ten seconds, and it is worth doing before you buy a travel eSIM.

The quickest check: dial *#06#

Open the phone app and dial *#06#. If the screen shows an EID number (a long number next to the IMEI), your phone supports eSIM. If you only see IMEI numbers, it does not.

Other ways to check

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data. If you see Add eSIM, it works.
  • Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager. Look for Add eSIM.
  • Pixel and other Android phones: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM. Look for Download a SIM instead.

Phones that support eSIM

  • iPhone: iPhone XR, XS and every newer model, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and newer).
  • Samsung: Galaxy S20 and newer, the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold series, and some newer Galaxy A models (for example A54 and A55, depending on the country they were sold in).
  • Google: Pixel 3 and newer.
  • Others: many recent flagship models from Motorola, Xiaomi, OPPO and others. Check with *#06#, because support often depends on the exact model and country.

Phones that usually do not

  • Older or cheaper Android phones, including many Galaxy A and Xiaomi Redmi models.
  • iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, which use two physical SIM slots instead.
  • Phones locked to an operator. Even if the phone supports eSIM, a locked phone may refuse an eSIM from another provider.

Is my phone unlocked?

Phones bought outright in Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia are usually unlocked. Phones bought on a contract abroad may be locked to that operator. The easiest test is to try a SIM card from a different operator, or ask the operator that sold you the phone.
