Internet in Kosovo for Visitors: Coverage, Free Wi-Fi, SIM Cards and eSIMs
Staying connected in Kosovo is easy. Towns have good mobile coverage, free Wi-Fi is the norm in cafés, and you can be online from the moment you land at Prishtina Airport. Here is what to expect and how to set yourself up before the trip.
The short version
- Mobile coverage is good in cities, towns and along the main roads. It can be weaker in some mountain areas.
- Free Wi-Fi is everywhere. There are cafés on every corner, and almost all of them have free Wi-Fi.
- Kosovo is not in the EU roaming zone. EU and other foreign SIM cards often pay high roaming prices here.
- Two easy ways to get data: a travel eSIM installed before you fly, or a local prepaid SIM bought in a shop.
Mobile coverage
Coverage is good in Prishtina, Prizren, Peja, Gjakova and the other towns, and along the main roads and motorways that connect them. Mobile data there is fast enough for maps, messaging, video calls and social media.
The mountains are a different story. In parts of the Rugova Valley, the Sharr Mountains and other remote areas, the signal can be weak or drop out completely. If you are going hiking, download offline maps and your route before you leave town, and tell someone where you are going.
Wi-Fi
Café culture is a big part of life in Kosovo, and almost every café has free Wi-Fi. The password is often on the menu or the receipt, or just ask the staff. Hotels, guesthouses and many restaurants offer free Wi-Fi too.
Wi-Fi is great for longer sessions, like uploading photos or a video call home. It does not help while you are walking around a town, looking for a bus or travelling between places, which is when mobile data matters. As anywhere, avoid online banking on open networks.
Getting online at Prishtina Airport
The easiest way to arrive is with mobile data already working. If you install a travel eSIM at home, you just switch it on after landing, and you can check the bus times or message your host while you wait for your bags. See Prishtina Airport to the city for the airport bus, taxis and shared rides.
If you prefer a local SIM, plan to buy it in town, at an operator shop or kiosk. Flying in through Tirana or Skopje instead? Read fly into Tirana or Skopje, and remember that a Kosovo eSIM works in Kosovo only.
eSIM or local SIM?
First check your own plan: some providers sell roaming add-ons that cover Kosovo, and SIMs from Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina often work in Kosovo at home prices thanks to a regional roaming agreement. If yours does not, choose between these two:
| Travel eSIM | Local prepaid SIM | |
|---|---|---|
| When you get it | Before you travel | After you arrive |
| Online at the airport | Yes | No, only after a shop visit |
| Price | Fixed in advance | Local packages are often cheaper |
| Your own number | Stays in the phone | Only with a dual-SIM phone |
| Local phone number | No, data only | Yes |
Prepaid packages from local operators can be cheaper than any eSIM, so for a long stay a local SIM is a sensible choice. For a short trip, an eSIM saves you the shop visit and gets you online on arrival. Our eSIM for Kosovo guide has more detail and the current plans.
How much data do you need?
| Trip | Use | Rough amount |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend or a few days | Maps, messages, a few photos | About 1 GB |
| One to two weeks | Maps, messages, social media | 3 to 5 GB |
| Two weeks or more | Lots of photos and video, video calls | 5 GB or more |
Using café and hotel Wi-Fi for uploads and video calls makes your data last much longer.
Useful to have on your phone
- Bus timetables. Intercity buses link almost every town. Check departures in the Kosovo bus timetables, and read getting around Kosovo without a car.
- The RruGO app, for shared rides between towns and from the airport, especially in the evening when buses thin out.
- Offline maps for the mountains and rural roads.
Frequently asked questions
Will my EU SIM work at home prices in Kosovo?
Usually not. Kosovo is outside the EU roaming zone, so check your provider's price for Kosovo before you travel.
Do I need a Kosovo phone number?
Most visitors do not. WhatsApp and other messaging apps work over any data connection. A local number is useful if you need to call local businesses often.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Most recent iPhones and many Android phones do, as long as the phone is unlocked. Dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, it supports eSIM. More in which phones support eSIM.
Can I use a Kosovo eSIM in Albania or North Macedonia?
No, it works in Kosovo only. Add a separate eSIM for the next country. One phone can hold several eSIMs.
When should I install the eSIM?
At home on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly. Follow our step-by-step guide.
