Mobile Internet in Kosovo for the Diaspora: Roaming, a Local SIM or an eSIM?
Every summer, and again around the holidays, thousands of people fly or drive home to Kosovo from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway and the rest of Europe. One of the first questions after landing is always the same: how do I get online? You have three real options, and each one makes sense for a different kind of visit.
The short version
- Roaming on your home SIM is the easiest, but Kosovo is not in the EU roaming zone, so it is often expensive. Check your provider's price for Kosovo before you travel.
- A local prepaid SIM from a shop in Kosovo gives you cheap data, often the cheapest option overall. You need a shop visit, and either a dual-SIM phone or to swap SIM cards.
- A travel eSIM is installed at home before you leave, works as soon as you land, and keeps your own number in the phone for calls and WhatsApp.
Option 1: roaming on your home SIM
EU "roam like at home" rules cover the EU countries plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Kosovo is not one of them. With a German, Austrian, Swedish or other EU SIM, Kosovo usually falls under a "rest of the world" or similar zone. Swiss SIMs have their own roaming rules, and Kosovo is usually outside the cheaper zones there too.
What that means in practice depends entirely on your provider and plan:
- Some charge for data per megabyte or per day, which adds up quickly.
- Some sell paid add-on packages for non-EU countries that include Kosovo.
- A few plans include some data in Kosovo, but that is the exception.
Look up your provider's roaming price list or ask them before you travel. If you do not plan to use roaming, turn off "Data roaming" for your home SIM before the plane lands, so apps do not use data in the background.
Option 2: a local prepaid SIM
Local operators in Kosovo sell prepaid SIM cards with data packages in their shops and at many kiosks. For a long stay with heavy data use, this is often the cheapest way to get online, cheaper than any travel eSIM.
The trade-offs are practical rather than about price:
- You need a shop visit after you arrive, and you are without mobile data until then. Take your passport or ID card, since shops may ask for it.
- You need a second SIM slot, or you swap out your home SIM and keep it somewhere safe. With your home SIM out, calls and texts to your usual number will not reach you.
- You get a Kosovo number, which is handy if you will be calling local businesses or family often.
Option 3: a travel eSIM
An eSIM is a digital SIM. You buy it online, scan a QR code at home on Wi-Fi, and the phone holds it alongside your normal SIM. When you land in Prishtina, you switch mobile data to the eSIM and you are online before you reach the baggage belt.
- Your number stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps using your usual number.
- No shop visit and no SIM card to lose.
- The price is fixed before you go, so there is no surprise bill.
- Data only: a Kosovo eSIM has no local phone number.
Your phone has to support eSIM and be unlocked. See which phones support eSIM if you are not sure. For more detail, read our eSIM for Kosovo guide.

How much data for a summer visit?
Most diaspora visits last two or three weeks, and a lot of that time is spent at home or in cafés with Wi-Fi. As a rough guide for two to three weeks:
- Maps, WhatsApp and some browsing: 3 GB is usually enough.
- Plus Instagram, TikTok and sending photos and videos: 5 GB or more.
- Video calls, streaming, or sharing data with the family: 10 GB or more, or a local SIM.
Practical tips
- Use café Wi-Fi. Cafés are everywhere in Kosovo and almost all of them have free Wi-Fi. Ask for the password. It saves your mobile data for when you are out and about.
- Hotspot for the family. One phone with a bigger data plan can share its connection with a partner's phone or the children's tablet. Choose more data if you do this.
- Dual SIM is your friend. Most recent phones take a physical SIM and an eSIM together, or two eSIMs. That lets you keep your home number and use local data at the same time.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM and keep it on only for the eSIM or local SIM you use for data.
- Download offline maps before driving into the mountains, where the signal can be weaker.
Which one should you choose?
Think about your trip. Staying for a month or longer and do not mind a trip to a shop? A local prepaid SIM is a good choice and usually costs the least. Coming for a week or two, landing late, or simply want to step off the plane already online? A travel eSIM is the most convenient. Many families combine them: an eSIM for the first days, then a local SIM if they end up staying all summer.
